The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team has looked to add to its roster this offseason, and Tommy Lloyd brought a star to the roster on Tuesday with former North Carolina guard Caleb Love, who many considered the top player in the portal, transferring to Tucson.
Love, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 16.7 points while shooting 37.8% from the field with 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
“Caleb is a tremendously talented guard who has significant experience playing college basketball at a high level,” head coach Tommy Lloyd said in a tweet. “We look forward to helping Caleb grow his game at Arizoan. And as we near the completion of the roster for the upcoming season, we feel breat about how everything has come together. Now, it’s time for the real work to start!”
He had originally committed to Michigan but did not end up in Ann Arbor because of an admissions issue.
The Wildcats now have a large guard that can create his own shot, something that was missing since Benn Mathurin left for the NBA. The Wildcats backcourt now features Love, point guard Kylan Boswell, Pelle Larsson and Alabama transfer Jaden Bradley.
The Wildcats roster has seen many changes with Azoulas Tubelis enterring the NBA Draft and Kerr Kriisa transferring to West Virginia. Guards Cedric Henderson Jr. and Courtney Ramey also exhausted their eligibilty.
Boswell is expected to have an expanded role, along with Henri Veesaar and Dylan Anderson up front in the paint with veteran Oumar Ballo.
The Wildcats also added San Diego State wing Keshad Johnson, who brings elite defense to this new roster.
Arizona had high hopes heading into the 2023 NCAA tournament, only for them to be cut short in the opening round against No. 15 seed Princeton in the opening round.
Since then, the ‘Cats have added experienced, big-name players to make sure the state of Arizona is well-represented at next year’s Final Four in Glendale.
