Heavy on hoops today…

When we last dropped in on Dan Majerle and the GCU basketball team, they were pushing Louisville to the limit and the local media was hyperventilating about whether ‘Lopes basketball was going to become the hot basketball ticket in the Valley. Two months later and losses at UC Riverside, at New Mexico State, at UMKC(Missouri, Kansas City), and CS Bakersfield, it’s a good exercise to take an objective look.
Losing to Bakersfield is something that the novice basketball fan will grab-a-hold-of, but those same fans need to be reminded that Roadrunners made the NCAA field of 68 just a season ago. search-1
Saturday night GCU beat New Mexico State on campus and it was a fun game to watch. There is no denying the atmosphere and advantage created by GCU is the best in the State(yes, better than Tucson IMO)
However, as long as Grand Canyon University is in the Western Athletic Conference, they will have to win the post-season conference tournament in Las Vegas EVERY season in order to go to the ultimate goal of the field of 68.Grand Canyon COULD/MIGHT get an at-large bid if they really load up on the non-conference games and WIN those games. Coming close to Louisville won’t cut it when the selection committee decides on eliminating teams out of the field. From my view, getting into the West Coast Conference or Mountain West is a much better option than their current position. No one can argue that…

Good to see ESPN take top-ranked Gonzaga serious. Sending the top announcing team of Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas to St. Marys Saturday night was good stuff. The same two were doing North Carolina at Duke two nights earlier…

Thumbs up to the NCAA Tournament Committee for sending out the projected 16 seeds on Saturday. The debate or intrigue grows with this sort of transparency. This is much more relevant than the same format for college football that we see in late October…

In our run of amazing sports achievement n the last year, you can add UCONN Womens Basketball going for their 100th consecutive victory on Monday night to the list. Bravo!
