Saguaro High School unveiled a new era of Sabercat football as Zak Hill was announced as the Sabercats new head coach Tuesday night.
Hill, 43, replaces Jason Mohns who left to become Arizona State’s tight ends coach last month.
A native of Portland, Oregon, Hill comes to Saguaro with extensive coaching experience, and college recruiting relationships, two qualifications Saguaro administrators and their hiring committee desired when the search for Mohns’ replacement officially started before the holidays.
After earning All-American honors at quarterback at Central Washington, Hill began his coaching career at Eastern Washington before stops at Hillsboro High (OR), Boise State, Arizona State and, most recently, American Leadership Academy Gilbert where he served as quarterbacks coach under Randy Ricedorff last season.
Hearing Saguaro has made their choice for their next head varsity football coach.

People close to the situation indicated Saguaro selected Hill over finalists Mark Martinez, long-time SHS offensive line coach, and Brandon Matich, East High (UT) head coach.
The school is hoping to retain most, if not all of Mohns’ previous staff, but Sports360AZ is hearing several Saguaro assistants will be exploring other options.
After winning the 2021 Open Division Championship, Saguaro lost in the Open Division Final this past season, falling to Basha 28-21. The Sabercats were dominant during Mohns’ tenure, becoming the first team in Arizona to win six-consecutive state championships (2013-18). He posted a 123-19 record in his 11 seasons as head coach.
