It was around this time last year when Devon Dampier took over the role as the starting quarterback for the Saguaro Sabercats. After transferring from Pinnacle and sitting out five games per AIA rules, Dampier led the Sabercats to win the Open Division State Championships. Now, nearly a year after playing his first game for Saguaro he has announced his commitment to play at the University of New Mexico.

The three-star quarterback had a reputation on the team for being a leader on the field and in the classroom. In a previous interview Dampier said his mother was encouraging him to go to an Ivy League school but New Mexico showed him the most love and interest from the very beginning. The 2023 dual threat quarterback was fielding offers from Ivy League schools, Air Force, NAU, and UofA among a handful of others. In early March, Dampier said on the Recruiting Roundup that the University of New Mexico did strike a chord with him.
“[New Mexico] definitely hit it saying we’re not going after the transfer portal, right now we’re looking for a high school player,” Dampier recalled.
