Landon Hairston is chasing history this season. The Arizona State Sun Devil could take down the program’s single-season home run record with a few more long balls in Big 12 play.
When ASU kicks off a series at BYU this afternoon, Mitch Jones – the owner of that record and the father of two BYU players – will be in attendance.
After a strong JUCO career at Utah Valley, Jones was a standout for the Devils for two years and had a decade-long professional career in the states and Japan. Now, he’s enjoying life as a baseball dad and a high school assistant coach in Utah. With his sons playing the Big 12, he’s been able to keep track of the Devils – led by his former teammate Willie Bloomquist – and Hairston’s season.
He caught up with Sports360AZ to talk about his time in Tempe, getting the Sun Devils back to Omaha and why now is as good of a time as any for his record to fall.
