When the Diamondbacks take the field on Wednesday in the National League Wild Card game against the Rockies, Zack Greinke will be taking the hill.
Who is receiving those pitches is still yet to be determined.
Jeff Mathis, who was Greinke’s preferred catcher this year, was on the disabled list with a fractured hand starting on August 22nd and was activated this past weekend. Chris Iannetta has been shouldering much of the load while Mathis has been out, and has become a reliable option at the plate for Torey Lovullo. Ianetta sports his highest home run total and batting average since 2008.
Lovullo is being cautious and patient seeing how Mathis responds to a ramped out workout schedule leading into the game, and the manager has said he wants to put Greinke in the best position to dominate the game.
Either way, the Diamondbacks will have a veteran with postseason experience behind the plate when the first pitch is thrown.
