The much anticipated Chaparral-Saguaro football rivalry game this Friday night will have to wait another year.
News broke Wednesday evening one Chaparral player tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the Firebirds’ junior varsity and varsity programs to quarantine. The student-athlete who tested positive is now in isolation.
The Firebirds’ freshman team will still continue their early season schedule as planned as “no contact between the teams has taken place” was noted through a release from the Scottsdale Unified School District.
“We feel so badly for the affected students that they will not be able to partake in their regular activities during this isolation period,” said Dr. Scott A. Menzel, Superintendent said in the statement. “However, this does serve as a sharp reminder that in order to keep our schools and extracurricular activities open, we must have the strong cooperation from all families, students and staff to monitor their health, recognize and report symptoms, and stay at home when sick or when a family member is sick.”
According to a source close to the situation at Chaparral, the Birds’ third scheduled game, also on the road against fellow 2019 Open Division participant Hamilton, “is in serious jeopardy” even if the team is cleared to resume practices after the mandated 14-day quarantine period.
