Pinnacle at Centennial
9/14/2017
Final: Centennial 23 Pinancle 20
Recap
Centennial jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on a Zidane Thomas TD run and a Xavier Rojas field goal.
Pinnacle finally got on the board in the 2nd quarter after Jacob Veach hit a FG for the Pioneers. These were the first points scored on the Centennial defense so far this year.
Centennial got the ball back and after a long Thomas run, found themselves in field goal range just before the half. Rojas was true from 39 yards out.
Centennial was up 13-3 at the half.
Pinnacle got the ball to open the second half and marched down the field to keep themselves in the game. Spencer Rattler hit Parker Redd three times for hooking up with Hayden Hatten for the score. 13-10 CeHS.
Centennial fumbled the ball at Pinnacle LB Kyle Carriker recovered and then probably the strangest set of events I have ever seen occurred.
The Coyote defense forced what looked to be a punt but Rattler, who also punts, faked the punt and hooked up with Hatten for the 1st down. Centennial was hit with 20 yards in penalties just after and Pinnacle advanced the ball to the 24 yard line. After a fumble, Pinnacle now faced 4th and 25 and a long field goal. The attempt was missed but a roughing the snapper call gave Pinnacle the ball back. Centennial was then called for pass interference before RB Kaleb Covington raced in for a score. Pinnacle had their first lead of the game, 17-13 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd.
That didn’t last long, Thomas rumbled in for a 73 yard score. Centennial was up 20-17 and Pinnacle fumbled on their first play of the next series after returning the ball to Centennial’s 10 yard line.
Centennial punted and after yet another fake punt conversion by Pinnacle, the Pioneers engineered a 6 minute drive to tie the game up at 20 after a 27 yard Veach field goal.
With 3:31 left to play, Centennial kept the ball on the ground with Thomas and Alex Escobar. Thomas gained 10 yards to move into field goal range but a face mask by Pinnacle made the kick a chip shot. Rojas nailed the 28 yard field goal with 2 seconds on the clock.
Final: Centennial 23 Pinnacle 20
Bottomline
Exciting game by two good teams that both have a chance to makes runs in 6A and 5A respectively. Only negative was the number of penalties.
Game Ball
You don’t see guys rush for 300 yards in a game very often, Boise State commit Zidane Thomas did that tonight for the Coyotes.
