For this special HoopTalk, we caught up with one of the cornerstones that helped get the Phoenix Mercury off the ground: Corey Gaines.
Now the head coach of Japan’s National Women’s Team, Gaines won two WNBA Championships with the Mercury as assistant coach in 2007 and head coach in 2009. He was also general manager from 2011-2013.
Additionally, Gaines spent time with the Phoenix Suns in several coaching roles from 2010-2015.
Gaines discussed his work growing the Women’s Basketball program in Japan, reminisced on his favorite memories in Arizona, and how he’s developed as a coach over the years.
