What’s Wrong with Sports, “Project Hail Mary” delivers…

-What’s wrong with sports

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr makes perfect sense, but he’s screaming into the wind. “I know this will not be a popular opinion in the league office, but I will continue to say it because it’s obvious we need to play fewer games. I think it would be a more competitive and healthier league if we played fewer games.”

There’s only so much tread on the tire, and if you think playing 82 games in basketball is necessary, I’d suggest thinking again. Owners of franchises and buildings know that taking away game nights will hurt the bottom line. When it comes to player health vs. owner interests, well, we know the owners win every time.

-Add up your monthly subscriptions and time taking in sports content

Some who read this space will remember when the Suns launched Pay Per View on Cox back in the 90’s. Turns out that today’s model wasn’t that far off 30 years ago. Now, if you won’t pay to stream, you won’t have complete access. Media companies aren’t going to turn off the faucet until the consumer steps forward and says, “Enough is enough”. Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, MAX, Apple+, etc, etc, etc. Sirius XM for radio has been my go-to for years.

-Sports Betting in excess

As Charles Barkley once said to me on the topic of sports betting, “It ain’t a problem if you have the money to do it.” Yet, I hear and read more and more content on gambling addiction. If you can’t pay the electric bill or groceries, dropping money on the Suns v Pacers o/u isn’t the way to go through life…

Parents not letting their kids fall down, fail, and get back up on their own

Are you the parent who constantly complains about the head coach? Are you the parent who believes that your son or daughter isn’t getting enough playing time? Are you the parent who goes on social media to air out your grievances? Are you the parent who never volunteers? Are you the parent secretly hoping a player fails so your kid benefits? Those who sit in the middle of the bleachers, top row dads, or behind the bench are usually the bitter ones. The ones who are there to support their kid are the ones sitting to sides, by themselves or with another supportive parent.,.

Your weekends are nothing but sports

Add your travel ball weekends for gear, registration fees, gas, food, hotel, stress(“if your kid isn’t here, he/she will be left behind”. Trust me when I tell you this from the side of the street of a club sports parent/coach for all four of our kids. It’s not worth it. Kids care more about the shenanigans in the hotel pool or breakfast buffet than what happens on court 3 at 8 am. “Regret” is a word I hear often from the parent once the club days are over. No family trips, no break from the grind. Finding a balance and the ability to say “no” are keys. A weekend trip to the mountains and church on a Saturday night or Sunday morning isn’t a bad way to go…

At the Movies…

Go see “Project Hail Mary” !!!!

I went into it thinking it would be a spin-off of “The Martian,” which Andy Weir wrote. “Project Hail Mary ” is a 2021 novel by Weir as well. Ryan Gosling was terrific. It’s got a bit of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in it, too. 2 hours and 36 minutes of runtime. Yes, my wife shed a few tears. We did not see it in IMAX, which is my only regret.
