Whats wrong with sports, this and that…

Arizona Sports News online

On the list of what’s wrong with sports, preseason NFL exhibitions are number one.

I dropped in on our hometown heroes of the gridiron on Wednesday—day one, year two for Jonathan Gannon as head coach. The history of this franchise shows that by November, he’ll likely be coming up on the halfway mark of his tenure. Too bad, because I like the game he talks and feel the on-the-field product started turning a corner last season even though the 4-13 record would say otherwise. Eyeball test says they’re heading the right way, but with this franchise, in my 31 years in the market, it’s been about what you don’t see. Please prove me wrong…

What I don’t like is the NFL commissioner FINALLY admitting that he’s not a fan of his product in August but wants more from the players in the way of expanding to an 18-game regular season. If I believe that player safety is priority number one, how about leading with, “We’re going to add a second bye week to our current regular season and then add another in-season game.” Keep adding weeks of contests, and eventually, the NFL will be like the NBA, where a fan pays for a ticket or tunes in, and their favorite player isn’t on the field…

Coco Gauff and Lebron James are fine choices to lead the American team into the Olympic opening ceremonies. Still, if Katie  Ledecky wasn’t in competition on Saturday morning, she should be one of the two…

Up a game, down a game for the final wild-card spot with a week to go in the regular season. Do you trust Paul Sewald to nail down victories? Every time the bullpen gate swings open, it’s an adventure.  Can he be fixed? Is it time to force-feed Justin Martinez(no), or is it trying to find two arms by the Tuesday deadline(yes)…

Corbin Carroll keeps hitting into bad luck. It’s easy to look at his average, but after watching almost every game in the last month, I’ve seen many times that he’s hit into tough luck. The idea of sitting for him to figure it out makes no sense. His speed, defense, and aggressive baserunning are the intangibles that don’t appear in a low .200 batting average. Keep sending him out…

Smart moves are being made at AZCentralSports…

Southwest announced today they are going to assign seating. Does that mean my dash for the exit row seat that doesn’t have one in front of it is over? Do you know how hard it is to fly any airline when you’re 6’8?!…

Terrell Owens’s son, Terique, in the San Fransisco 49ers camp. This hit me in a couple of ways. It means I’m old, and I’d like to see him make the team and play at Dallas to stomp out the star like his dad did…

I’m not alone on this –  when I saw Ricky Pearsall play in high school at Corona Del Sol, I didn’t see a future first-round NFL pick. Then again, I didn’t see Brock Purdy as a 50-million-a-year quarterback at Perry High School. Yep, that’s the number starting to float around in the agent world…

Mat Ishbia can bring hockey back to the Valley after the Suns hoist a championship banner…

Good for Thom Brennaman! CW Network lands a top voice for their ACC football coverage…
