The United States opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dominant fashion Friday night, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in its Group D opener behind a clinical attacking performance and control throughout the match.
The Americans wasted little time asserting themselves, building a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime while controlling possession and creating consistent chances in the final third. The U.S. finished with 65.2% possession and dictated the tempo from start to finish.
The Americans seized control early when Paraguay put the ball into its own net for an opening own goal. Balogun thought he had doubled the advantage later in the half, but the strike was waved off for offside. The forward would not be denied for long, however, finding the breakthrough soon afterward with a well-taken finish. He struck again just before halftime to send the United States into the break with a commanding lead and complete momentum. Gio Reyna put the finishing touch on the performance deep into stoppage time, burying a late goal to cap a convincing 4-1 victory.
Christian Pulisic contributed an assist and helped orchestrate several dangerous attacking sequences. Alex Freeman and Malik Tillman each recorded assists as the United States showcased its depth and creativity moving forward.
Paraguay struggled to find opportunities against a disciplined American side but avoided a shutout when Maurício scored in the second half. The goal did little to change the outcome, however, as the United States remained firmly in control and comfortably closed out the victory.
The convincing win gives the Americans an ideal start in Group D and an early boost in the race to advance to the knockout stage. With three points secured and a plus-three goal differential, the United States positioned itself well heading into its next group-stage match.
For one night, everything clicked for the Americans. From Balogun’s finishing to Reyna’s attacking spark and a midfield that controlled possession, the United States delivered one of its most complete performances and sent an early message to the rest of the tournament field.
The United States will look to build on its strong start when it faces Australia in its second Group D match on June 19 at 12 p.m. PST in Seattle, Washington.
