Three Dot Thoughts – No-Hitter Company for Gilbert, Impact of BYU, More…

If you had Tyler Gilbert throwing a no-hitter for the Diamondbacks, you win big! Saturday night, Gilbert joined the company of Theodore Breitenstein (1891), Bumpus Jones (1892), and Bob Holloman (1953) as major league pitchers who have spun a no-hitter in their first career start. Gilbert doing it against the San Diego Padres, a team trying to hang on for a playoff spot, was more than impressive. Not an easy lineup to navigate. He joins Randy Johnson and Edwin Jackson on the list of Diamondbacks pitchers who have thrown a no-no(Big Unit threw a perfect game), Just another oddity in the 2021 Diamondbacks season…

More wild, wild west stuff is happening in college football. What BYU did this past week was essentially end the idea of having 85 scholarships for college football.

So a protein bar company sponsors the entire team. Unbelievable!  Now a school can take as many players as they want if they have a big booster, a sponsor who wants to do the same for their school. So the idea of being able to build super teams in college football has become a reality. I had a college football friend raise this question to me Saturday afternoon, “Does a player really want to be on scholarship anymore?” Let’s say a football kid takes the money that the sponsor gives them and decides to invest it rather than use it for tuition, books, and board. Could the player decide to take out student loans to pay for school while their NIL money is making interest in an account?

It was just one preseason game,  but Steve Keim’s 2021 draft class looked pretty darn good. The same goes for Colt McCoy as a backup to Kyle Murray at quarterback. McCoy completed 6-of-7 passes for 69 yards…

Former Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton did a nice job on the radio broadcast of the Cardinals game. It was his first time doing a game. He has some practice reps a week earlier. He’s got a future in front of him in the booth…
