The Arizona State Sun Devil men’s golf team gave the Texas Longhorns about all they could handle at the NCAA national championship finals, but ultimately the Longhorns prevailed 3-2 at Grayhawk golf course.
Travis Vick needed a two-putt on the 18th hole to win his match against Cameron Sisk to earn the decisive third point of the day and clinch the national title.
The Sun Devils’ Mason Andersen and David Puig (19 holes) notched the two match wins for Arizona State on the day. Andersen won all three of his matches, which is a record for a NCAA championship.
Arizona State made both cuts during the weekend to advance to match play as the seventh seed. The Sun Devils defeated No. 2 Oklahoma in the quarterfinals and the defending national champions in Pepperdine in the semifinals before facing off against Texas in the finals.
The future also looks bright for the Sun Devils with Preston Summerhays completing his freshman season. He impressed throughout his three matches, needing just 13 holes to win his pairing against Oklahoma and finished with a two-stroke win against Pepperdine. He lost his final matchup in 17 holes but kept the pressure Longhorn senior Pierceson Coody throuhgout the final.
