While San Francisco adds Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen, the Diamondbacks are still sitting on Zack Greinke and Yasmany Tomas contracts. While the Dodgers said goodbye to Adrian Gonzalez, Curtis Granderson, and Andre Ethier, the Diamondbacks lost Chris Iannetta(valuable piece) and added bullpen depth in Brad Boxberger.
I am waiting for something of substance to happen with the Diamondbacks. It’s not been an impressive offseason by the hometown 9 up to this point in my opinion. Sure, I’ve heard and read about Manny Machado coming over from the Orioles. The topic of trading Paul Goldschmidt has been floated out too. Maybe it’s time to say goodbye to Patrick Corbin. Can the team afford to keep A.J. Pollock after this season (arbitration eligible)?
With 30 days to go until pitchers and catchers report, I’d say that the Dbacks offseason grade right now is Incomplete.
Look, I’m not expecting the Diamondbacks to be able to put together a roster that could chase down the Dodgers in 2018. I am wanting to see them make some moves to alleviate the burden of having Greinke and Tomas on the roster. Not easy to make big deals with so much money floating around those two.
If Goldschmidts camp has told the Diamondbacks that his client would prefer a new home once his deal expires in Arizona (after the 2019 season), then the team should trade him sooner than later. He finished 3rd in the MVP voting, so getting a king’s ransom for him would be the prudent thing to do. His contract financially puts him 12th on the list of first basemen. 12th!!!!!!
Adding Machado and subtracting payroll would be the ideal route. General Manager Mike Hazen isn’t one to go for the headlines (I’m fine with that), but this roster needs more than a nip or tuck before opening day…
