Suns fans are in unfamiliar territory on draft night. The NBA Draft usually meant top-10 picks and fanfare. Players that had been combed over thoroughly by fans and media alike for months and months.
But this year, it’s an anticipated quiet night after the Suns were slated in at the No. 29 slot.
It got that much quieter after Suns general manager James Jones sent that pick and Jevon Carter to Brooklyn for guard Landry Shamet, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In 61 games in 2021, the 23-year-old guard logged 23 minutes and 9.3 points per game. He’s an elite 3-point shooter, making 39.7% from beyond the arc in his career. Shamet provides outside shooting and can take care of the basketball as well.
Carter, a defensive specialist and fan favorite, saw significant time in the bubble but never really cracked the lineup into a consistent role in 2021.
Shamet has one remaining year on his deal at $3.8 million before he becomes a restricted free agent.
The Suns now do not hold a pick in Thursday night’s draft as Brooklyn also owns their second round pick when Phoenix sent Jared Dudley and the pick to the Nets for Darrell Arthur in 2018.
