Suns flameout, NBA GM’s on Chris Paul future head coach, Al McCoy’s goodbye

Arizona Sports News online

AL McCoy deserved better.

51 years of calling Suns games on the radio and Thursday night he had to endure a no-show in a must-win game. The late great Cotton Fitzsimmons might’ve used the term “Scottsdale game” to describe the abomination that took place on the court. His term came from teams that would have a night off before a game and stay out till the wee hours of the morning and their quality(or lack there-of) would show up on the court the next evening. Al signed off the broadcast for the final time with his signature, “so long for now”. Touching…

The Fans deserved better.

The commitment of time, dollars, and energy put up by many of you to support the franchise only to be dealt a sloppy, uninspired showing by the hometown performers deserved the boos that rained down at halftime. 81 points allowed in a half is a sign of being outhustled. Lack of effort is as much a part of allowing 81 than it is the opponent. This falls on Monty Williams. This is why the discussion about replacing him as head coach are valid…

The Media deserved better.

I’ll make this about us for a moment, only because Devin Booker did not speak after last night’s game. Very uncharacteristic for him to blow off his responsibility to explain what happened. When things are bad, show up. When things are good, show up…

What does the future hold?

Mat Ishbia has two superstars on the roster who should have a say on Monty Williams future as head coach. IF both Booker and Kevin Durant aren’t consulted on Monty’s future, I’d be shocked. Yes, I know Mike Budenholzer was fired in Milwaukee just two years after winning a title the Bucks, so fans and media are drawing conclusions. From the outside it appears that the two players are close to the head coach, so if Ishbia makes a change, would there be risk? Durant and Booker barely played together this season because of injuries. Running it back with the three of them isn’t a bad option, or is it?…

Chris Paul as head coach? NBA.com General Managers survey on current players who are future head coaches.

Keep that one in your memory bank.

A few have thrown Steve Nash’s name by me. I’d ask, “how did that go with Durant in Brooklyn?”

Pretty fair question to ask about the influence of Isiah Thomas and Tom Izzo on Ishbia. What have they seen from James Jones and Monty Williams since Ishbia took over the franchise? To think that they don’t have a voice in the circle would be naive.

I can make a case for keeping Williams as the head coach. He’s been saddled with a player that hasn’t produced as a first pick in the draft talent. Deandre Ayton over Luca will go down in Suns lore. We all see the on-court result of Ayton. He needs a change of scenery and so do we. Firing Monty over his lack of progress shouldn’t be a metric in the conversation.

It’s easy to say that a head coaching move needs to happen after two straight postseason flameouts with a team built up to be a Finals contender. I get it, but will Booker and Durant have any say in the matter?…

So long, for now…
