Nationally ranked number 5 Sunnyslope defeated St. Mary’s 60-51 in a battle Saturday night, to capture the AIA Open Division State Championship.
Game MVP, Rider Portela, led the team with 16 points and 17 rebounds.
This is the program’s sixth state championship, but this win has a deeper meaning. The Vikings came into the season ranked number 1 in Arizona and ranked number 5 nationally, fueling the team to show everyone how good of a program they’ve become.
