Brad CesmatPenalties and turnovers did in Arizona State here in Provo, Utah, Saturday night. Sixteen accepted penalties by the Cougars took down the undisciplined Sun Devils 27-17 in front of a near-capacity crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The 16 flags were the most in a game by an Arizona State team since 2006. The Sun Devils also turned the ball over four times in a forgettable performance.

Sun Devil linebacker Merlin Robertson with the interception, but on the 60-yard return, which would’ve put Arizona State deep in BYU territory, had the ball knocked out of his hands. and was recovered by Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall.

Jayden Daniels night
In his first game of 2021 against good competition, Daniels got off to a solid start in the first half completing 7 of his first 9. But two interceptions and some bouts of wildness would lead to a final 21-29 for 265 yards. Unlike the first two opponents, BYU would not let Daniels use his legs. The last rushing line for the Sun Devils quarterback was just 8 yards on ten carries.
Defense in the 2nd Quarter
Arizona State’s defense gave up pass plays during the second quarter of 31, 20, 34, 34, and 15 yards. This happened after the defense looked very good in the opening stanza. However, as the night went along, the Cougars could find different ways to gash the Sun Devils and would give up 361 yards on the night.
Spots and Dots
Back to the 17 penalties. It’s one thing if you’re a new group that hasn’t played much together, but all I’ve heard and read is the number of returning starters and the chemistry. Well, the numbers don’t lie. Herm Edward’s team was just flat undisciplined, and the crowd noise in the fourth quarter played a part in the repeated offsides penalties.
