Spencer Stowers won’t be on the sidelines when the 2018 3A State Champion Casteel Colts open 5A play in August. The only head football coach in school history is choosing family and location over the burgeoning powerhouse he’s built at Riggs and Power in the Southeast Valley.

The 32-year-old Stowers informed his team Monday morning that he’s accepted an assistant varsity coaching role at Morehead High School in the Fargo/Morehead area on the North Dakota/Minnesota border. 
“We have a six and a three year-old and this opportunity is for the betterment of our family, 100-percent,” Stowers said exclusively to Sports360AZ.com about his decision to leave.
Stowers’ wife, a microbiologist, has already found employment and has family in the Fargo area.
“This decision wasn’t made overnight, it’s been ongoing over the last three months,” he explained.
The coordinators and position coaches are all staying on with the program. Stowers was grateful.
“The Chandler Unified School District is second to none and truly supported my vision of the program to the highest degree. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive group of administrators from the top down.”
Casteel assistant coach Bobby Newcombe will take over the reigns of the Colts’ program. Newcombe was a sixth-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2001 and had a stint in the CFL. He won a national championship at the University of Nebraska in 1997.
Stowers believes Newcombe is going to excel in his role.
“To have someone like him with his knowledge and life experiences, will go even further than what I could do. When he gets in front of the team and stands out, he will take them to new heights.”
Newcombe teaches business marketing at Casteel campus and has several degrees, including a Doctorate in Management in Organizational Leadership.
The Colts’ program has several college football prospects, led by senior quarterback Gunner Cruz, who’s committed to Washington State.
