Phoenix has retained a crucial piece of the rotation in Sophie Cunningham.
Cunningham’s agent with Perpetual Sports, Navarro Thompson, informed Rachel Galligan of Just Women’s Sports and Alexa Philippou of ESPN, that her client plans on signing a two-year contract extension with the Mercury.
This comes after Cunningham poured in 12.6 points per game while shooting nearly 45% from the field (both career-highs).
She continued to grow her reputation as a sharpshooter, knocking down 2.5 treys per contest (also a career-high) on 40% 3FG.
Perhaps even more impressive was her ability to adjust following Tina Charles’ departure from the club.
Cunningham played both forward and guard (depending on the lineup) for the first time in her career – and she thrived on both ends in the role.
She drew attention from Dallas, Los Angeles, and Connecticut, but ultimately decided to stay with the team that drafted her.
The Mercury now has Skylar Diggins-Smith, Brianna Turner, Diamond DeShields, and Sophie Cunningham on the books for this upcoming season.
Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi have both made their intentions clear of playing this year as well.
General Manager Jim Pitman and the front office have their work cut out for them as they craft the roster ahead of training camp, but this was an important first step.
