Many, including former Sun Devil standout safety Jordan Simone, were skeptical when Ray Anderson hired Herm Edwards to lead the Arizona State football program back in December of 2017.
Fast-forward 20 months and it appears the “Herm Train” is rolling down the tracks of Tempe just fine as the Devils prepare to kickoff their season against Kent State.
“Year one you had some big victories, now in year two you expect them to do better than they did last year and have some big wins,” Simone said in a recent in-studio interview with Sports360AZ.com. “You see this transition kind of take place with Herm.”
While true freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels is the biggest “unknown” at this point, the most stabilizing force offensively is certainly Eno Benjamin, who’s coming off a breakout sophomore season and will be working behind a veteran offensive line this fall.
“Herm said it at the beginning, ‘what travels? A good run game and a great defense,'” Simone explained. “That’s what they have this year. I believe they have one of the top two in the league if you look at it from a depth standpoint. The sky is the limit for them defensively. It’s going to be the best defense ASU has had in the last five to eight years I think. It is the most stacked defense and they’re all sophomores for the most part.”
The Devils will kick things off with Kent State Thursday at 7:00.
