Evan Svoboda ended the 2023 season with a win in his home state. He’s hoping to start the 2024 season doing the same thing.
The Wyoming quarterback and Red Mountain alum helped the Cowboys take home an Arizona Bowl title to cap off the season last year. Now, Wyoming heads to Tempe to face the Sun Devils on Saturday.
Svoboda’s path to Laramie was not a straight line. He graduated in the class of 2021, recruiting was not only limited due to the pandemic, but eligibility freezes meant experienced players were staying in the sport longer. That meant opportunities that may have been there in a more normal recruiting cycle no longer were for many players graduating high school.
Svoboda opted to go the JUCO route, playing at Snow College. He had been in contact with Wyoming coming out of high school, but there simply were not enough scholarships out there to make it work. A year later, Wyoming had two quarterbacks transfer and quickly looked to add Svoboda. In the long run, the relationships and communication paid off.
After helping the Cowboys win the Arizona Bowl, Svoboda is now the QB1. He’s 6-foot-4, 240-pounds. He runs well and has a big arm. He isn’t afraid to hit somebody. He also wears No. 17.
Sound familiar?
It’s hard not to watch tape and see similarities to former Cowboy and current Buffalo Bill Josh Allen.
It’s a comparison he knows will happen, and he accepts it. But he also wants to continue that legacy of strong quarterback play while creating his own memories with his current team.
That can all start against ASU on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium.
