Randy Bennett’s Hardwood Odyssey Brings Him Home

I learned this week you can see A Mountain from Westwood High School.

You’ll have to squint but you can make out the outline of the buttes. For new ASU head coach and Westwood alum Randy Bennett, his basketball past and present aren’t far apart geographically, but it’s a change he’s been working toward for over 40 years.

The Mesa native was officially introduced on Thursday, and the connections between him and the Arizona hoops scene remain strong.

He played for Westwood and quite a few former teammates attended his introduction. His dad is a coaching legend at Mesa Community College. His long-time assistant Mickey McConnell, who took over the St. Mary’s program after Bennett’s departure, is a Dobson grad. Mickey’s father, Rick McConnell, still runs the Mustang program.

Bennett said the ultimate reason he left St. Mary’s, where he’s been for 25 years, had nothing to do with Gaels and everything to do with Sun Devils. He’s seen ASU be a national power, and he wants to get the Sun Devils back to that prominence.

Mixing his passions for sports and storytelling, Jordan comes to Sports360az as a multimedia reporter/producer looking to share the best stories Arizona has to offer. You can follow him on Twitter and Instagram @JordyHamm
