Preview HBO Doc ‘Charlie Hustle and the Matter of Pete Rose’

The story of MLB’s all-time hits leaders Pete Rose is one of the most controversial athlete stories of all-time.

After he was caught betting on baseball, he was banned from MLB and evenually from being inducted into the baseball hall of fame.

He now spends much of his life trying to get in to the hall of fame.

No matter which side of the aisle you sit on, HBO’s new documentary series ‘Charlie Hustle and the Matter of Pete Rose’  is an intriguing watch. You hear lots of stories from Rose and those who know or knew him best.

It’s intriguing to see all the baseball success highlighted through the lens of highlights, and memories from Rose and former teammates. There’s no question about how great of a baseball player he was.

His big lie is a highlight of the story of course. But the aftermath of his big lie, and eventual path to telling the truth, is told in a masterful way.

Director Mark Monroe doesn’t take sides, but allows notorious liar Pete Rose to share his story, while sometimes pushing back in his questioning and sometimes through other people who know Rose.

Each episode sits at 56 minutes, with the first and second ones airing on July 24 and episodes three and four dropping July 25.

You can watch on HBO.
