Lucky me, when I broke into the business, Donald T. Sterling was running the San Diego Clippers, and Alex Spanos owned the Chargers. I used to think that sports owners were “in it to win it”, but I realized in pretty short order that making money was more important than winning. I arrived in 1993, and fortunately, I was able to see Jerry Colangelo and his group of talented, well-regarded people conduct their business the right way. I would spar with Jerry on the air, but he showed up every Monday night at 6:30 for “Talk to the Owner”. I was not given any talking points. No one came down the hall saying, “You better play by our rules when it comes to our partners.”
No way this owner could do such a thing.
How does this franchise(“beleaguered” is kind) build trust with the paying customers when decades of mistake after mistake come directly from the owners’ box when hiring head coaches? We all see and know the problem, and it’s not going to change.
