Communication is crucial in coaching. While the largely new Arizona Wildcats staff is working hard to get on the same page as their roster ahead of the August 31 season kickoff, coaches must find a way to break down complex schemes into simple terms that can be built upon.
Quarterbacks coach Lyle Moevao had to do that – and then some – as a player when he played internationally in France and Japan. For two years after he wrapped up his career at Oregon State, Moevao played internationally and not only had to work through a language barrier, but his knowledge of the game was much deeper than the majority of his teammates.
Moevao said international players view football more as a hobby than their American counterparts.
But that meant he needed to go back to the basics in his instruction and communication with the team. Now that he’s a coach, it’s helped him foresee potential communication pitfalls and ensure his position group is on the same page.
He broke down that experience and how it impacts his current role in the video above.
