The Lumberjacks were shut out in the first half, while South Dakota put up 27 points after scoring on their first three drives of the game in the first ten minutes.
South Dakota opened up the second half with another touchdown, extending their lead to 34. The Lumberjacks defense then held the Coyotes scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Towards the end of the third quarter, NAU found the end zone on a 16-yard pass from Jeff Widener to Hendrix Johnson. The touchdown completed a short six-play drive for 44 yards.
Widener threw the ball well throughout the game, passing for 202 yards on 33 attempts and 22 completions. He did throw two interceptions, though, one in the first and third quarter.
Northern Arizona ran the ball for 140 yards from a plethora of players. They were led by Kevin Daniels with 67 yards and Widener with 54 yards.
Morgan Vest was the lone Lumberjack to record double-digit tackles, totaling 12 in the contest. Tristen Vance forced a fumble and recorded a sack as a standout on defense as well. Carson Taylor also notched the only other sack.
NAU will face the Arizona Wildcats next Saturday in Tucson.
