In the Sun Devils’ first practice back from Camp Tontozona, all eyes remain no the quarterback position.
The perceived main battle for the starting spot was between incumbent starter Trenton Bourguet and Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne.
Pyne suffered a hamstring injury during the Camp Tontozona scrimmage and his timetable to return is still up in the air.
“Quarterbacks are different,” ASU heath coach Kenny Dillingham said. “He’s not like a running back or a wide-out, so we don’t know the exact time he’ll be back.”
Dillingham did call the injury a “curveball” when it came to determining who the Week 1 starter will be in just over two weeks.
“Before I kind of had a plan,” Dillingham said of his timeline for a quarterback decision. “I think that plan has potentially been derailed a little bit, so we will see how we progress and go from there.”
True freshman Jaden Rashada continues to impress in extended on the field. After a tremendous Camp Tontozona scrimmage, Dillingham said that Rashada had a few checks that were “freaking awesome” and had made “top-notch, NFL throws.”
Bourguet brought a stability to the position last year when he took over for an injured Emory Jones and didn’t look back after that. Is it his job to lose? Will Pyne be ready to return to the field soon? Can Rashada continue this ascent?
A lot of questions to be answered over the next 17 days.
