Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (August 6th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
PPR League: Roy Helu or Danny Woodhead? “Danny Woodhead. Melvin Gordon’s an amazing talent, he is not a great pass-catcher. He’s not a great pass-blocker, either. I still see him in the neighborhood of 250-275 carries but Woodhead is going to be a very good draft bargain in PPR leagues.”
Is T.J. Yeldon a sleeper? “He is. The one question I have with that is the offensive line is not good. I mean, they made a few improvements in the off-season but Yeldon’s got the advantage of being a three-down back with really no one behind him to steal significant carries so if he can make some hay behind that offensive line and Blake Bortles can take that next step of being a good NFL quarterback then Yeldon can certainly be a Top 20 fantasy running back.”
Boom or bust: Charles Sims? “I don’t know if I’d call him either to be honest with you. Right now Doug Martin is projected to be the starter. I think Sims comes in on third downs and on passing downs so it’s a little bit of a committee with Martin leading the way. If you’re in a PPR league Sims is certainly worth taking a flier on somewhere late. If you’re in a standard league he’s probably not going to be drafted and if he is it won’t be until one of the final three rounds.”
Ameer Abdullah’s fumbling bother you? “No. He is a guy I absolutely love. He is one of my favorite sleepers out of the 2015 rookie class because not only does he have the talent to be an explosive player like a Reggie Bush when he came out of USC but Joique Bell’s not even on the field right now. He’s coming back from an Achilles injury, an ankle, a knee. He’s 29 years old and I would not be shocked if Abdullah led the Lions backfield in touches this year.”
Could Justin Forsett be a steal in 2015? “Depending on where you get him. The hype train is starting to heat up with him because of Marc Trestman’s offense and the way that he utilizes running backs. His rushing totals may go down somewhat but Matt Forte had 102 catches last year. Forsett only had 44. A lot of people out there are saying that number could be doubled. If you’re in a PPR league he’s worth a second-round pick. Overall, he’s likely to be off the board in the third or fourth round in standard formats.”
Early thoughts on Dorial Green-Beckham and a few other rookie wide receivers? “Green-Beckham I still feel is raw. I don’t know if I’d draft him and if I did it wouldn’t be until very late. Breshad Perriman is another guy who banged up a little bit but he’s projected to be the other starter opposite Steve Smith [in Baltimore] so he’s another guy to keep an eye on. Nelson Agholor in Philadelphia could position himself to be a starter and although USC wide receivers have not really projected well at the NFL level, you enter in Chip Kelly’s offense you got a guy who’s going to be a potential sleeper.”
