Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (September 19th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
What do you make of Jay Cutler from a fantasy perspective after the first two games? “With Cutler, had a pretty good game last week but there’s always that risk that Jay Cutler turns Jay Cutler on you. He’s got a good match up against the Jets this week and we all know their defense is not good and their team is not good so I would say Cutler is streamable. I don’t know that he’s a Top 10 fantasy quarterback this week but he certainly is a guy you can stream if you have a super flex position.”
Is it time to give up on Andrew Luck if he’s on your roster? “This is why I tell people to add an injured reserve spot or two in their leagues because if you draft a guy, you should be able to put him on an IR spot if he’s injured. The NFL does it, so fantasy fans should be able to do it. If you don’t have that spot, depending on how deep your roster is and what other quarterbacks you have…I mean, I have Andrew Luck in a couple leagues and I’m just sitting back and waiting. He’s so good that eventually he will be worth the wait but there’s going to come a time, I don’t think it’s hit yet, where it’s going to be a decision to cut ties or continue to burn a spot on him. If the Colts believed he was going to miss more than six games I think they would have put him on the PUP list but this is an odd situation with the Colts and especially after some of the things Chuck Pagano has said. With that being said, I have him. I’m holding him. I’m waiting to see what happens because I believe at some point the wait will be very beneficial and I’ll be rewarded because you’re talking about one of the four or five best quarterbacks in fantasy football.”
Are you buying the early returns on Derrick Henry in Tennessee? “I want to see what happens there because that is a situation where, if Henry takes over and is more of the featured back, he could be a monster for fantasy fans. I just don’t know if that will happen if DeMarco Murray is 100% and, at this point, it doesn’t seem like he is.”
I had Greg Olsen, now have Jason Witten. What’s your view of Witten? “He’s the number one tight end right now in fantasy football in PPR leagues so yes, that’s not too bad! I didn’t love Witten last week because if you look historically, he hasn’t done great on the road and the Broncos defense is pretty tough. With that being said, I swung and missed on Witten in Week 2. Now you’ve got the Cowboys playing the Cardinals and I do think that Cardinals defense can be beaten by Jason Witten so Witten is certainly startable, especially in PPR leagues.”
What’s one of your biggest surprises or trends early in the 2017 season? “The wide receiver position is tanking so far, much like it did last year. Julio Jones had a good game last week, was not good in Week One. Antonio Brown had a bad game last week. A.J. Green’s been a disappointment because Andy Dalton has forgotten how to throw the football. He doesn’t do that any more it seems. Doug Baldwin has been a disappointment this season. So we’re seeing some of the big name wideouts, like we did last year, putting up some unfavorable numbers. It’s only two weeks into the season so I think things will turn around for some of these guys but you’ve got to be a little worried if you drafted some of these players in the first round, the second round or the third round they’re not producing right now and that’s been a common theme among some of the big-name wide receivers in fantasy football.”
