Desert Vista sophomore center is standing above the rest

The Desert Vista girls basketball team is off to a solid start in 2012-13 under a new head coach and a 15-player roster made up of just five seniors.

One of the under classman for the Lady Thunder is 6’4″ sophomore center Kristine Anigwe whose 12 points and 12 rebounds per game is starting to get some increased attention. As a matter of fact, Anigwe was one of the players mentioned to keep an eye in the Nike Tournament of Champions last weekend by one division I coach.

“I think the season is going good, were playing pretty decent,” explained Anigwe. “It’s kind of different with our new coach and all.”

Anigwe is a force down low for Desert Vista as she commands the paint with her rebounding and her ability to block or alter shots on defense and her ability to score in the low post. With a year on varsity under her belt, she feels is starting to come into her own as a sophomore.

“I think I’ve gotten stronger,” Anigwe mentioned. “Our weight training coach, Coach C has helped improve a lot.”

Though she is a lot to handle on the block, Anigwe is also not afraid to step back and play a mid range game. Which is something she is working hard to improve upon.

“I want to be a diverse player,” explained Anigwe.

Keep an eye out for the Kristine Anigwe and the young Desert Vista Thunder girls basketball team in Division I this season.
