We know what the Arizona Diamondbacks look like presently, but it is hard to keep up with the future because they don’t play here locally. However, most Minor League games are televised and can be viewed using the MiLB.TV package, including all Diamondback affiliates. Whether you can follow the teams or not, we will keep you up to date on what you need to know. Every week we take a look at the Diamondback’s farm system and a closer look at the top 20 prospects here in 2013 and their production throughout the season.
1. Tyler Skaggs-LHP-Reno Aces (AAA)
Last week: 1 long relief appearance (win), 6 innings, 6 hits, 1 run (earned), 2 walks, 8 Ks, 1.50 ERA
Season (Reno): 11 games (10 starts) (4-5), 62.2 innings, 67 hits, 37 runs (32 earned), 21 walks, 69 Ks, 4.60 ERA
Season (Diamondbacks): 3 starts (1-1), 16.2 innings, 17 hits, 10 runs (all earned), 6 walks, 17 Ks, 5.40 ERA
*Notes: In Skaggs’ last three appearances in Reno, he has alloed just one earned run pitching at least 5 innings in each.
2. Archie Bradley-RHP-Mobile Bay Bears (AA)
Last week: 1 start (loss), 5 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs (all earned), 1 walk, 6 Ks, 10.80 ERA
Season (Mobile): 10 starts (5-3), 59 innings, 44 hits, 18 runs (15 earned), 27 walks, 60 Ks, 2.29 ERA
Season (Visalia): 5 starts (2-0), 28.2 innings, 22 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 10 walks, 43 Ks, 1.26 ERA
*Notes: Wow Bradley is human afterall. Last week was by far his worst start of the season. In starts where he hasn’t been as shap this season, it was largely because of walks. But he only walked one batter last week’s start and opponents hit .350 off of him. The highest opponents average in a game before then since being called up to Mobile was .269.
3. Matt Davidson-3B-Reno Aces (AAA)
Last 10 games: .225 AVG, 9 hits, 4 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 1 walk, 15 Ks, .311 OBP
Season: 72 games, .299 AVG, 84 hits, 34 runs, 21 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 45 RBI, 23 walks, 86 Ks, 1 stolen base, .357 OBP
*Notes: Davidson’s numbers were a little down and his Ks were up this week but he is still hitting .333 in the month of June.
4. Adam Eaton-OF-Arizona Diamondbacks – Disabled list (Elbow)
*Notes: Has participated in extended spring training games as a designated hitter as he continues to work through his elbow injury. He could go back out on a rehab assignment within the next two weeks.
5. Chris Owings-SS-Reno Aces (AAA)
Last 10 games: .489 AVG, 22 hits, 12 runs, 7 doubles, 2 home runs, 17 RBI, 3 walks, 7 Ks, 1 stolen base, .521 OBP
Season: 77 games, .362 AVG, 123 hits, 65 runs, 21 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 52 RBI, 10 walks, 64 Ks, 12 stolen bases, .382 OBP
*Notes: Owings has been incredible. I will be ver curious to see what the D-Backs intend to do with him in the coming months whether it be a call up or if he will be involved in a trade for a starting pitcher. Owings has Didi Gregorious in his way at SS and Aaron Hill in his way at 2B both for years to come on the big league squad. Either way, he has proven he is ready for the next step.
6. Nick Ahmed-SS-Mobile BayBears (AA)
Last 10 games: .220 AVG, 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 10 RBI, 1 walk, 6 Ks, .233 OBP
Season: 73 games, .182 AVG, 43 hits, 23 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 23 RBI, 18 walks, 46 Ks, 7 stolen bases, .243 OBP
*Notes: Ahmed’s average is creeping up to the Mendoza line and continues to be an RBI machine of late. His average in June is .276 after hitting well below .200 in April and May.
7. David Holmberg-LHP-Mobile BayBears (AA)
Last week: 2 starts (1-1), 14 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs (all earned), 1 walk, 14 Ks, 3.86 ERA
Season: 15 starts (4-4), 94.2 innings, 82 hits, 37 runs (28 earned), 24 walks, 64 Ks, 2.66 ERA
*Notes: Holmberg in the first start through a complete one hitter. If not for a home run, it was a no-hitter and shutout. His second start was another story. He lasted 5 innings which is his lowest output and most runs given up since May 25th. He had an unbelievable string of 4 starts he put together before coming down to earth a little bit in his last outing.
8. Zeke Spruill-RHP-Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB)
Last week (Diamondbacks): 2 relief appearances, 2.1 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 1 K, 0.00 ERA
Season (Reno): 9 starts (3-3), 57.2 innings, 59 hits, 28 runs (26 earned), 19 walks, 24 Ks, 4.06 ERA
Season (Mobile): 5 starts (0-3), 31.2 innings, 24 hits, 7 runs (5 earned), 12 walks, 20 Ks, 1.42 ERA
*Notes: Spruill was called up to the big last weekend after riding a 17 inning consecutive scoreless streak and being one of the hottest pitchers in the organization over the last month. He started the the year in AA and is now pitching in a long relief role with the D-Backs.
9. Stryker Trahan-C-Missoula Osprey (R)
Last week: 3 games, .250 AVG, 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 home run, 4 RBI, 2 walks, 4 Ks, .357 OBP
Season: Season started June 20th
*Notes: Good first week for Trehan. Been excited to see him get started in basically his first full season in the system. He reached base via hit or walk in each game thus far.
10. Anthony Meo-RHP-Mobile BayBears (AA)
Last week: Currently listed on the 7-day disabled list
Season: 8 starts (0-4), 35.1 innings, 31 hits, 26 runs (25 earned), 25 walks, 17 Ks, 6.37 ERA
*Notes: Meo was placed on the DL on 5/18 and is retroactive to 5/16. Per Dbacks Director, Player Development Mike Bell, Meo is going through a dead arm phase and they are giving him some time to build himself back up.
11. Michael Perez-C-Visalia Rawhide (A+)
Last 10 games: .171 AVG, 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 20 Ks, .216 OBP
Season: 43 games, .176 AVG, 29 hits, 20 runs, 8 doubles, 5 home runs, 24 RBI, 9 walks, 1 stolen base, .220 OBP
*Notes: The strikeouts are a huge problem for Perez. 20 in 10 games including a golden sombrero back on June 21.
12. Jose Munoz-SS-Missoula Osprey (R)
Last week: 4 games, .154 AVG, 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 4 Ks, .214 OBP
Season: Season started June 20
*Notes: Missoula is off to a 2-2 start. Munoz is an important piece to their success.
13. Evan Marshall-RHP-Reno Aces (AAA)
Last week: 2 relief appearances, 2 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 walk, 1 K, 4.50 ERA.
Season: 28 relief appearances (2-5), 2 saves, 30.1 innings, 45 hits, 21 runs (17 earned), 19 walks, 29 Ks, 5.04 ERA.
*Notes: 2 uncustomary tough outings for Marshall but it wasn’t all his fault as defense let him down in his last appearance. But his ERA in june (2.45) is lowest of any other month this season.
14. Jake Barrett-RHP-Visalia Rawhide (A+)
Last week: 1 relief appearance, 1 innings, 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 walk, 1 K, 27.00 ERA
Season: 27 relief appearances (2-1), 15 saves, 26.1 innings, 21 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), 9 walks, 34 Ks, 2.05 ERA
*Notes: Everyone has an off day once in a while. They are rare for Barrett as in a closer role he has been extremely reliable. But half the earned runs he has given up this season came in his last appearance.
15. Evan Marzilli-OF-Visalia Rawhide (A+)
Last 10 games: .188 AVG, 6 hits, 7 runs, 1 RBI, 8 walks, 10 Ks, .350 OBP
Season: 73 games, .202 AVG, 50 hits, 34 runs, 13 doubles, 1 triple, 15 RBI, 38 walks, 86 Ks, 7 stolen bases, .316 OBP
*Notes: Marzilli has struggled of late from the dish but I said this about him a month or so ago and it remains true, when he gets on base things happen. Thats seen in the last week as he scored more runs than he had hits.
16. Jake Lamb-3B-Visalia Rawhide (A+)
Last 10 games: no games played, disabled list.
Season: 37 games, .287 AVG, 37 hits, 25 runs, 11 doubles, 8 home runs, 24 RBI, 29 walks, 43 Ks, .415 OBP
*Notes: Was placed on the DL back on June 4th. It is his second trip to the DL this season. When healthy he has been very productive.
17. Andrew Chafin-LHP-Mobile BayBears (AA)
Last Week: 1 start (win), Complete game 9 innings, 7 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 walk, 8 Ks, 1.00 ERA
Season (Mobile): 9 starts (4-4), 59.2 innings, 55 hits, 21 runs (17 earned), 24 walks, 40 Ks, 2.56 ERA.
Season (Visalia): 6 starts (3-1), 31 innings, 32 hits, 16 runs (all earned), 14 walks, 32 Ks, 4.65 ERA
*Notes: Quietly, Chafin has been as reliable as they come in a starting role for Mobile. In all 9 of his starts since being called up, all have gone at least 6 innings and the most earned runs given up is four. And as seen with his complete game last week, he is only getting stronger.
18. Chase Anderson-RHP-Reno Aces (AAA)
Last week: On the Diabled list. Last start was June 10th.
Season: 12 starts (3-7), 66.2 innings, 80 hits, 50 runs, 40 earned, 24 walks, 64 Ks, 5.40 ERA
*Notes: Anderson had been solid in his last few starts before having this injury setback.
19. Kyle Winkler-RHP-South Bend Silver Hawks (A)
Last Week: 1 relief appearance, 3 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 3 Ks, 0.00 ERA
Season (South Bend): 4 appearances (3 starts), 20 innings, 17 hits, 7 runs (all earned), 6 walks, 13 Ks, 3.15 ERA
Season (Visalia): 10 starts (1-5), 46 innings, 67 hits, 48 runs (39 earned), 28 Ks, 41 Ks, 7.63 ERA
*Notes: Winkler was moved to the bullpen in a long relief role after a shaky outing in his last start. It was a very productive 3 innings which could possibly get his confidence back up to return to the rotation.
20. Brandon Drury-3B/1B-South Bend Silver Hawks (A)
Last Week: .293 AVG, 12 hits, 7 runs, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 7 RBI, 3 walks, 5 Ks, .341 OBP
Season: 68 games, .314 AVG, 86 hits, 47 runs, 27 doubles, 3 tripes, 11 home runs, 51 RBI, 16 walks, 42 Ks, .350 OBP
*Notes: I am most impressed with Drury’s low K rate for a power hitter. on the season he has just 42 Ks in 274 ABs. The 20 year-old is having a fantastic season and quickly becoming a possible 3B of the future in this organization.
