A game-changing first overall pick that has been a household name for years. A back-court leader that not only impacts a franchise, but potentially the entire league for years to come.
Few know that pressure.
But Diana Taurasi does.
That’s why it was special what was happening on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix. Diana Taurasi, Caitlin Clark, and 2014 No. 1 overall pick Brittney Griner all on the same floor.
The league’s future face that has opened the door to countless new WNBA fans. But that door hangs on the hinges that players like Taurasi and Griner built over the past 20 years.
The Fever took this game 88-82. It was a back-and-forth game, and while Clark did not have a 30+ point game, shews the engine of multiple Indiana comebacks throughout the game. When it was all said and done, she tallied 15 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds, one board short of her first WNBA triple-double.
Taurasi, at 42 years young, posted 19 points, and Griner led the Mercury with 24 points.
It was a regular season game on a Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of over 17,000 in Phoenix. But the ones that got the league to this point, and the ones that will carry it further, shared the court, in a the first of hopefully many battles to come.
