The hometown nine lost 110 games a year ago, yet here they are, just two games out of a wild-card spot. Yes, I know it’s not even Memorial Day, but the Diamondbacks have earned a sliver of our sports attention.
The Dodgers will be holding a blue convention at the big ballpark for the next four days. Nothing wrong with that. They’ve earned the right to take over the Diamondbacks park, but Arizona is starting to put together a fun, entertaining product, and might make this summer enjoyable. If the back end of the bullpen hadn’t come into games with a gas can and matches, we’d likely be talking about this four-game set with the Dodgers as a first v second place matchup in the rugged NL West.
If Torey Lovullo can keep the ship heading in the right direction for the next couple of weeks, do the Diamondbacks suddenly become buyers in mid-June rather than going down the usual path of dumping bodies before the trade deadline? The thing is, I can’t see the bottom falling out of the starting pitching, at least with the top three. After a slow start(I’m being kind here)at the plate, the team leads the major leagues in home runs. Christian Walker may resemble Dave Kingman at the plate(.195 average), but his 11 long balls are tied for second in the National League. Names like Smith, Varsho, Perdomo, Luplow, Thomas, and Rojas are helping to win games.
The Diamondbacks have been off the radars of most of the Valley the last couple of years for many reasons, not just losing baseball games. I’m just merely suggesting we have something interesting starting to happen here. We are the busiest sports market in America. Lots of options for you to spend your money. Not all of the options are good. The dollars and time you put behind the Diamondbacks would be a wise investment.
Four games with the Dodgers over this long weekend is an excellent place to start…
