With the season opener less than two weeks away, Arizona State head coach Todd Graham still isn’t revealing who will start under center when the Sun Devils face Northern Arizona University on August 30.
“We’re going to evaluate this tape and we’ll let you know where we’re at on Monday,” Graham told the assembled media following Saturday’s scrimmage at Camp Tontozona. “I can’t see us not using two quarterbacks. We’ll probably end up using more than one quarterback but we’ll have a primary guy.
Here’s a look at how the three candidates fared Saturday and their thoughts on why they believe they should be starting against NAU.
Taylor Kelly (redshirt sophomore): 6-10, 162 yards, two touchdowns
“I’m feeling very comfortable with my reads. I’m feeling great with the receivers and the offensive line. We’ve got a good connection right now.”
Michael Eubank (redshirt freshman): 12-16, 96 yards, touchdown; 15 rushes, 106 yards, touchdown
“I felt I helped myself greatly [in the scrimmage]. I think I did well. I think I showcased my legs and showcased what I can do for this offense.
Michael Bercovici (sophomore): 10-14, 138 yards, touchdown, interception
“I didn’t take any sacks. I got the ball out of my hands, gave our players opportunities and just ran the offense.”
Each player was given equal opportunity to showcase their skill set and knowledge of Graham’s high-tempo offense. With the position still up for grabs, it’s apparent each offers something unique.
Kelley’s consistency vaulted him to the top of the unofficial ASU depth chart last week in Tempe. The 6’5 Eubank has the biggest upside of the trio, while Bercovici appears to be the best passer in the group.
