The Arizona State Sun Devils announced former Boise State Zak Hill will join the coaching staff as offensive coordinator. Hill was the Broncos’ offensive coordinator since 2016. Under his watch, the Broncos rated as a top-40 offense according to Pro Football Focus. In 2019, Boise State averaged 36.8 points per game – 14th-best in the country – with a true freshman under center at quarterback and running back.
“Zak is very well versed in offensive football,” ASU head football coach Herm Edwards said in a release. “He comes from winning programs and he played the quarterback position. I like that. He’s good at building an offense around the personnel that he has available to him. He will force the defense to adjust with multiple formations and personnel groups. His style fits the DNA of what we want on our coaching staff. He’s an excellent teacher.”
Additionally, the Sun Devils promoted Derek Hagan from analyst to a full-time coaching position. Prentice Gill was also recently hired and will serve as an assistant coach and assistant recruiting coordinator under Antonio Pierce.
Arizona State is 94th in the nation in scoring offense and 89th in total offense.
The Sun Devils will play in the Sun Bowl against Florida State on December 31st. Chris Karpman of Sun Devil Source reported Hill will not coach in the bowl game, but give input since Boise State played and beat the Seminoles earlier this year.
