ASU Coaching, Opportunities Led to Jesús Gómez Transfer Decision

No matter what ASU Football and Jesús Gómez will be linked.

The Eastern Michigan kicker hit his first career field goals against Arizona State in 2022. Those nine points were the difference in the game when the Eagles beat the Sun Devils 30-21 and it was Herm Edwards’ last as head coach.

Now, Gómez will kicking for the Sun Devils after announcing his transfer on Sunday.

“Obviously coaches was a big one for me,” Gómez said in a message. “Having a good relationship with them (was important) and feeling their support which I did since the first conversation we had.

The senior hit 80% (20/25) of his field goals this year – and 79.3% over three years – with a long of 57 yards. In that span, he also hit 95/100 extra points.

That consistency could jump up another level when he gets to Tempe, both on the field and in the classroom.

“Weather is perfect year-round so that definitely helped make the decision easier,” Gómez said. “The academic support is amazing so combining that with football made it an easy decision.

Gómez was on a visit this past weekend where he got to see the ASU culture on full display.

“From the first moment I met the coaches I felt how they care more about me as a person and not a football player,” Gómez said in a message. “You can see how everyone in the building is bought in to the vision of Coach Dillingham and the future is bright for this program. It feels good to be a Sun Devil!”

Gómez and Clemson wide receiver Noble Johnson are the first two transfer commitments for the Sun Devils this offseason.
