Records have fallen throughout a season of “firsts” for the GCU women’s basketball team.
Tiarra Brown became the program’s career leader in points. Transfer Alyssa Durazo-Frescas broke the record for most three-pointers in a season, doing so in about 10 less games than previous record-holders. Trinity San Antonio became the program’s first Olympian when she played for Team Puerto Rico in the 2024 summer games. The 23-game win streak the team is currently on is a record as well. It’s also the longest active streak in college basketball..
For the first time, the Lopes received votes for the Associated Press top-25 poll.
Each accomplishment, each record broken is a building block for perhaps the biggest “first” for the program: To make the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.
The Lopes were close to that accomplishment last year. They were the No. 1 seed in the WAC tournament, only to get knocked out in the semifinals.
Key contributors like Brown, San Antonio and Laura Erikstrup returned from that team. Durazo-Frescas – who leads the NCAA with four made three-pointers per game – and forward Nneka Obiazor transferred from UNLV and have been instant impact players.
It’s the most talented group head coach Molly Miller has had at GCU. It’s the most experienced as well. It’s also the most hungry.
GCU will now look to stay red-hot and to close out the season. If they continue their win streak, awesome. But the real win streak that needs to happen is in Las Vegas for the WAC tournament. The Lopes have to win two and they’ll knock off another first in clinching a NCAA tournament berth.
