A needed distraction…

Carlos Alcaraz was taking it to Novak Djokovic this morning, but I wasn’t paying close attention. Yes, the match was on, but my mind was far away. 

In my sophomore year of high school, I was sitting with my friends at the “green top” of Escondido High School when we heard that President Reagan had been shot in an assassination attempt. We were shocked and scared. We didn’t know what the future would hold. In our classes that day, I remember our teachers trying to assure us that our country would be ok.  I’m sure many of you can relate to moments when world events took place that unnerved you. 

Yesterday, I was sitting here just starting to work on a Three Dot Thoughts column when I saw the story about the assassination attempt on former President Trump. Shortly after seeing the news unfold, I closed this laptop because I had no thoughts to share. Three Dots isn’t a “hot take” column. There’s enough of that floating around the atmosphere. No screaming into the sewer drain about what might’ve, would’ve, should’ve, or could’ve happened.  Last night was a time to watch and wait. I was relieved to hear that the former President would be ok.

No one should be celebrating or joking about what happened Saturday afternoon, but some didn’t read the room(or our country) and put up hate in deplorable taste. 

Back to Alcaraz, as the match was nearing its conclusion, I got caught up in the beauty of the play. Here’s this 21-year-old making Djokovic run lines like you would see at the end of a basketball practice. John McEnroe gasped at some of the shots that the Spaniard was making. For the next hour, I took it all in. It was a needed distraction for me during a time of stress and uncertainty.
