The drive for greatness and unparalleled work ethic starts from the top in head coach Jason Mohns and his staff who aren’t afraid to put in the extra time with the ‘Cats to make sure things on and off the field are done to the best of each player’s abilities. When said effort isn’t there, Mohns has a way of making sure it is.
“I thought we had a great June in terms of effort, attitude and buy-in,” Mohns said Thursday to Sports360AZ.com. “We’ve dealt with some minor injuries that has kept us from being full-strength but we are starting to get healthy and should be full go for our team camp in California. We are planning on ramping it up [this month].”
No one in the history of Arizona high school football has won five consecutive state championships but Mohns and the Saguaro 2017 version welcomes the test which officially starts August 18th against Catalina Foothills in Tucson–the same team Saguaro beat last November to win their fourth-straight title.
“We’ve been working hard and our kids are hungrier than ever,” Mohns said after a spring workout. “I think that’s the biggest challenge when you come off of winning four in a row. Are you still hungry? Are you still motivated?”

The Saguaro summer football calendar has been a busy one. Besides playing in (and hosting) 7-on-7 passing league tournaments and big man competitions, the Sabercats will resume summer weight lifting sessions next week before their five-day team camp at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California.
“We’ve got a great group of kids who have bought in to playing Saguaro football,” Mohns said with a smile. “We’ve got all the talent in the world right now. We’re as athletic and skilled as we’ve ever been.”
Something tells me opposing coaches and players won’t be smiling much this fall. Another year, hopefully another championship journey for #SagU. For nearly the past half decade, it’s the only thing they’ve known.
