Zone Read: Championship Saturday – Ask the Experts

Arizona Sports News online

And just like that, the big school Arizona state football championships are just hours away.

The 2025 season, as expected, has been another memorable one, so “Zone Read” thought there would be no better time than now to reach out to a group far smarter than yours truly to get their thoughts on Championship Saturday – featuring Casteel against Centennial in the 6A game and CUSD members, Chandler and Basha, facing off in The Open under the lights at ASU.

Cody Cameron (Sports360AZ.com)“The big match up I can’t wait to watch this weekend is the Chandler receiving core against the Basha defensive backs.

“That Chandler wide receiver room had an amazing year and I believe as a group, they are the best in the state at creating separation in man-coverage. The Basha secondary is littered with athletes who will play on Saturdays at the next level. That’s an ultra athletic group who are both skilled in zone and man coverage. They are also not afraid to come up and get active in run support as well.

“These are two really well-coached units and I’m excited to see them square off against each other.”

Cameron Cox (KPNX Channel 12)“The Open Division title game is the definition of hard work paying off.

“Chandler and Basha both had to really earn this moment. For the Wolves, many considered this a rebuilding year after they missed the (Open) playoffs last season and with a new head coach, Ty Wisdom, taking over. After  Chandler upset Hamilton in the Open Semis, Coach Wisdom stood there with tears in his eyes watching his team celebrate like a proud dad. Players talk about how much “hard work” they put in to get Chandler back to their first title game since 2021.

“For Basha, it was about revenge after losing to Liberty in The Open Championship game last year. All offseason coaches reminded them about that game and then — to knock off Liberty in The Open semis stopping them on a goal line stand…. that’s football poetry.

“Chandler and Basha, despite being in the same school district, didn’t play each other this season. These two teams know each other very well, and many of the kids on both sides grew up together. Now both match up to crown a new king of Arizona high school football.”

Chris Eaton – (ArizonaVarsity.com)“For overall storylines, a couple interesting ones are that IF Canyon View and Chandler both win this weekend, then all four of the championship coaches would finish with a title in their first year at that school.  We had about 70 coaching changes last year and it’s safe to say that some of them gave immediate results.”

“Looking at the 6A, it’s a Casteel team playing in its first big-school championship game.  The Colts won a title in its second season in 2017, but that was in the 3A.  Casteel is facing a team used to playing on the last Saturday of the season.  Centennial is seeking its eighth championship, and second straight in the 6A.  In the last 21 years, the Coyotes have played in 14 championship games (including this year).

“Casteel games have been exciting in these playoffs.  The Colts are outscoring their opponents 118-113 in just three games.  This was the first year of the Open play-in and both teams lost in that round, then won a pair of home games to keep their seasons going.”

“In the Open, it’s Chandler Unified School District teams Chandler and Basha. They didn’t meet in the regular season this year with the shakeup in the regions.  This is the seventh year of the Open Division and in 6 of those years either Basha or Chandler has played in the championship games.  For the first time, both teams are in the title contest.
“Basha matched Liberty when it came to defensive effort last week (one defensive TD allowed) and will have to be on its game against Chandler quarterback Will Mencl.  The junior has 33 TD passes and averages 300 yards per game.  But the Wolves have unleashed him in these playoffs.  In the last four games, Mencl has 10 rushing scores, including three last week against Hamilton.
“For Basha, it’s unclear which QB will be starting, but Jake Rogers has earned some experience these past few weeks.  I would expect the Bears to feed Noah Roberts and Joshua Gaines and challenge a Chandler team that just limited Hamilton to 46 rushing yards on 22 carries.”

Eliav Gabay (Sports360AZ.com) – “While there are great matchups everywhere in this year’s State Championship weekend, I’m not sure there’s many better storylines than the Chandler Bowl in the Open Division between the Basha Bears and Chandler Wolves. Two excellent teams that both had to defeat worthy opponents in Liberty (Basha) and Hamilton (Chandler) to get to this point.

“Who doesn’t love a great coaching match up? Chris McDonald vs Ty Wisdom…get ready for a show.

“There’s also another layer of beef between these programs. When they faced off in 7’s during the offseason, according to McDonald, a couple of their assistant coaches had a post game chat:

“Chandler’s offensive coordinator, Ace Justin, responded with his own recollection of that moment.

“Fake juice or not, the only way to settle it is on Frank Kush Field this Saturday. For the title and the last word.”

Jordan Spurgeon (Sports360AZ.com) – “This Open Championship feels like it’s setup to be an instant classic. Basha has been nationally ranked for most of the year and for good reason. Chandler has completely course corrected the ship in year 1 under Ty Wisdom. Basha has 20+ players with D1 offers which is a number that never fails to amaze me.

“The Bears’ leading edge rusher is the 6A sack leader, Dante Bruley. He is one of the most dominate trench players I’ve seen this year. Noah Roberts and Josh Gaines are the best backfield duo in the state and both will need to have big games in order for Basha to win another Open Title.

“Chandler goes as Will Mencl goes. 46 total touchdowns to just four interceptions is astounding. Clean football is a major reason why the Wolves are in this position and their junior signal caller is the key to that.”
We have one last ride this weekend in Tempe.

Grab the popcorn and enjoy.
