The Washington Huskies are currently riding high as a top team in the country. The Arizona State Sun Devils are in the midst of a losing streak and looking to turn a corner for the second half of the season.
Sound familiar?
The 2023 season is playing out similarly to when these two teams matched up in 2022.
Washington was ranked. ASU was in the middle of a four-game losing streak. Despite the odds pointing to the Huskies, Arizona State escaped with a win, the first for Shaun Aguano as interim head coach.
Adding to the improbable outcome was how it happened. Starter Emory Jones went down with an injury and back-up Trenton Bourguet – a former walk-on – went punch-for-punch for the potent Washington offensive attack. Bourguet completed 15/21 passes for three touchdowns and 182 yards.
He became an instant fan-favorite and kickstarted a season where he completed 71% of his passes for 1,490 yards and 11 touchdowns in six games.
Can the Sun Devils re-capture some of that magic this year? We’ll see on Saturday.
