Three Horizon Huskies Make It Official

Arizona Sports News online

A trio of Horizon High School 2020 student-athletes put the pen to paper late Wednesday morning making their college choices.

Offensive lineman Tommy Graif, defensive end Kyle Lewis and quarterback Jake Martinelli celebrated with family, friends, coaches and classmates as they inked their names on the dotted line in the quad area of the north Scottsdale campus during the school’s lunch hour.

Graif signed with Wisconsin-River Falls, Martinelli with South Dakota School of Mines and Lewis with Army. It was also a time for reflection for three of the players who helped lead the Huskies to the Open Eight playoffs in December.

“I’m going to miss everything about Horizon,” Martinelli said to Sports360AZ.com. “I’m going to miss all the coaches, all the underclassmen teammates. It’s going to be tough leaving this place but I know I’m going to be back here for sure.”

Lewis, who like Martinelli also missed significant time the past two years due to injury, certainly echoed those sentiments.

“The brotherhood,” Lewis said shaking his head. “I’m going to miss all these guys. The locker room. Workouts. Late nights. I’m really going to miss it all.”

Graif, a former basketball player, who just started playing football within the last years, has all the tools to equip himself well at the next level in the Midwest. He has family in an area near UW-RF.

“Tommy’s got great feet,” Wisdom said. “His recruiting blew up in the last month, month-and-a-half with a lot of D-II schools coming in and offering him…I think he has a huge upside and he’ll be a good one for [Wisconsin-River Falls].”

Standout tight end Jay Rudolph signed with San Diego State during the first signing period in December.

A Valley native, Eric has had a passion for the Arizona sports scene since an early age. He has covered some of the biggest events including Super Bowls, national championships and the NBA and MLB playoffs in his near 20 years in local media.
