Todd Haley, National Media on Purdy, Hamilton Coach…

Arizona Sports News online

Todd Haley gets along well with Michael Bidwill and Steve Keim from what I’ve been told. He’s gone through the learning curve of being a head coach during his time leading Kansas City. Give Haley Alex Smith at quarterback and suddenly the hometown heroes have something, right?
Personally I think that Patriots linebacker coach Brian Flores is the clubhouse leader to become the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. I was told that he “blew away” Bidwill and Keim when they met with him earlier this month.
Haley is a link to the Cardinal Super Bowl team, so I understand why some fans would be pushing for him. He’s a Bill Parcells disciple, which doesn’t hurt either.
James Betcher would be a fine choice too, but Bidwills track record is to go with an offensive guy(Whiz and Arians)…

Expect some national media on Perry quarterback Brock Purdy in the coming days. His rags to riches story has finally been picked up by a major national brand. A FCS home visit in mid-December is all he had, to Boise State, Alabama, Iowa State, Central Florida and Texas A&M six weeks later. As one Pac-12 assistant coach told me on Friday, “it just goes to show how stupid the world of recruiting can really be.” Um, yep…

Staying on Purdy for a minute, here’s what Iowa State had waiting for him in hotel room Friday night. Attention to details, right down to the number that Purdy wore in high school at Perry. Resized9520180119951649379593711
Friday night Purdy and his family had dinner at the home of Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell. Most of the Cyclone assistants were at the house, but so were two wide receiver recruits, and former Desert Mountain kicker Brayden Narveson, who’s already enrolled in the school in Ames, Iowa. A very low-key family environment recruiting visit…

By the way, when people rip Arizona State for not recruiting Purdy, they are missing the point. The previous regime at ASU didn’t do their jobs on the Tyler Shough and Purdy recruitment. Both players were passed over. I don’t blame Arizona State for reaching out to Purdy this week after Brady White left, and I don’t blame the player for saying he’s not interested in going to Tempe. Recruiting is a year-round deal. Purdy would be an ideal candidate for any great business school, but the previous staff did nothing to build a bridge to him. He shouldn’t feel obligated to visit Tempe…

Hamilton went out-of-state to grab Michael Zdebski as their new football coach. Those in the room or who were part of the process texted me last night with phrases like “energetic”, “well-organized”, “does more with less”,”the total package”, “Coach Z is a man of high character and strong values”. A Michigan State assistant coach highly recommended Zdebski, who was chosen over former Valley high school coach and head coach from a Texas high school…
