Jay Feely running for office, Shough built tough, Cardinals at 16, more…

I used to host a radio show with Charles Barkley called, “Talk to the Govenor”. Charles would come on and talk about all sorts of things across the political landscape. This was in the mid-90’s when Charles would prep by reading the green and purple sections of USA Today at his locker.
I wasn’t surprised when Kevin Johnson turned his political chops into becoming Mayor of Sacramento. I was paired on the radio in Southern California with Steve Garve shortly after the “Garv” finished up his playing career. No surprise at all that today Steve is in the political world of the west coast.

Today, I dropped in former CBS NFL analyst/kicker Jay Feely’s announcement of running for U.S.House of Representatives seat in the 5th Congressional district for 2026.
A couple of weeks back, Jay had told me over a round of golf in Marana that he was going to make a run at it and at the time I was not surprised.

Jay can talk. Jay is a deep thinker. I won’t pretend to know Jay inside and out, but the times that I have visited with him you can tell that there’s much more to him than the sport of football. Faith and Family are his cornerstones.
His speech at The Garage in Gilbert, was met with plenty of applause and television cameras. He will have no problem getting media attention. He’s an accomplishe speaker who will only get more comfortable as time goes by. Whether I agree or disagree with his politics doesn’t matter, the fact that he’s put his hat into the ring of public service should be admired. We haven’t had too many athletes take this step here in Arizona. His politcs is very much on the Donald Trump side of the aisle. How will he handle the inevitable opposition? The “stick to sports” crowd was already on me by Tuesday night for going to the Feely announcment. Why shouldn’t I hear the message of a former NFL athlete running for office? Silly…

With the 16th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select? I say trade down. This team isn’t just one or two players away from contending. There is a solid base, but they need to hit on picks. Trade down and still be able to nab Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon…

“10 cities, 30 visits” That was the response QB Tyler Shough sent me via text on Tuesday night on his visits with NFL teams since the Combine in early March. He’s easily the most interesting storyline in this years selection process. The 2018 graduate from Hamilton high(Chandler) deserves all of the positive attention after the road that he’s traveled. He will have a draft party with his family, wife Jordan, her family, former teammates, and coaches from both Texas Tech and Louisville here in the Valley. Something tells me he could be the first round surprise of the night…

The Suns will have a new name on the arena, new head coach, Durant will be gone, and some fresh faces will dot the roster. The name on the arena could be a credit union based in Utah.
Fact is Mat Ishbia made comments earlier this week that would lead one to believe that they have already strategized on the marketing side on how to convince the fans that all is well. What is said in July, was worked over by PR and marketing folks in April. Win the press conference…

Arizona State basketball has a home game with Gonzaga and will play in the Maui Classic this November. For those who want to complain about Bobby Hurley scheduleing, your simply wrong. Add to the non-con, the Big 12 has upped the numboer of conference games to 18 for the 25/26 season…

I’m not overly concerened with Zac Gallens rocky first month of the season. I thought he settlled down nicely in Chicago over the weekend after a rough start. His showing in April vs the Yankees was spectacular. That said, with the schedule beefing up with the Braves, Mets and Dodgers all coming up in the next couple of weeks, I’d like to see him be the ace of the rotation. Anything short would be a concern…

Working on a cool project for this Fall with one of our partners. Something different and unique in the high school football space. Looking forwared to sharing more by the first of May…
