In a historic day that opened up their Big 12 football era, Arizona State fell to Texas Tech on the road 30-22.
Running back Tahj Brooks led the way for the Red Raiders with 117 yards and Josh Kelly caught 10 passes for 89 yards and a score. Texas Tech jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never gave up the lead.
The Red Raiders had an efficient opening drive that led to a score and then picked off Sam Leavitt to lead to another score.
The difference in the game came on third down. The Sun Devils were held to 3/11 on third down and then 0/3 on fourth down tries. Texas Tech converted 8/16 third downs.
Both teams played sloppy games in terms of penalties. ASU averaged 49.6 penalty yards per game and reached that in the first half. In total, ASU were penalized for 69 yards. On the other side, Texas Tech was penalized nine times for 94 yards.
Cameron Skattebo was the driving force of the Sun Devil offense, rushing for 60 yards and two scores and also caught six passes for 117 yards.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt finished the day with 282 passing yards and an interception. On the ground, he had nine rushes for 25 yards and a touchdown.
The Sun Devils now have a week off before hosting Kansas and Utah in back-to-back weeks at Mountain America Stadium.
