Sean Payton, GCU Hoops, ASU “Special” teams, Mahomes or Allen at WM Open

Arizona Sports News online

In my circles, not much care or emotion about the future of Kliff Kingsbury as head coach of the Cardinals. Mercifully, Sunday will end one of the worst seasons in the franchise’s run in Arizona. There’s no need to rehash the nonsense; we’ve done more than enough on that topic. Safe to say that packing up the footballs can’t happen quickly enough. I guess the movers will be busy packing boxes in more than a few offices at S. Hardy Drive in Tempe…

I could argue that Sean Payton would have a better chance of winning in Arizona running the Cardinals than going to Denver…

Feeling good about Grand Canyon University joining Arizona and Arizona State in the NCAA Basketball tournament come March. Bryce Drew has a 51-19 record through his first two-and-a-half seasons for the Lopes. He has them playing at a level that is on the right trajectory for March. Saturday’s loss at Stephen F. Austin doesn’t change my thoughts. Watching the Lopes with high expectations…

Christian Kirk. Another one that walked away. Don’t bore me with who the Cardinals had or the salary cap implication. Fans DO NOT CARE. They want wins. They want results…

Special Teams need to be special if a football team will succeed. We have eight long months until there is a football game for Arizona State, but the special teams are getting a significant makeover in the early days of Kenny Dillingham.

Friday, former Sun Devil kicker Jace Feely, landed with Deion Sanders at Colorado. Two long snappers have left the Sun Devils for Ohio State and Central Florida, respectively. All-Pac 12 punter Eddie Czaplicki went from Tempe to USC. Carter Brown had an outstanding freshman season, but the kicker decided to push the portal button out of ASU and may well land with an SEC program, from what I hear. That is a lot of talent going out the door. More questions than answers today in my mind.

On the other side, the Sun Devils did get a commitment from Corona Del Sol kicker Carston Kieffer on Saturday. I like his nickname, “Legatron”…

The drama in soccer between USA head coach Gregg Berhalter and Claudia Reyna reminds me of the madness i’d see and hear when my kids played the sport at a club level. You simply can’t script this stuff…

I can’t see Trevor Bauer on the Diamondbacks’ radar, even at a price tag of just $720, ooo.00. Yes, he would certainly help the starting rotation in a big way, but the off-the-field story hasn’t gone away. In my mind, Bauer is one of the top two-three worst moves in the short history of the Diamondbacks. It’s been ten years since he was traded, but the owner and president are still here…

I believe that either Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes will play in the WM Open Pro-AM on Wednesday of Super Bowl week. Heard that a mega-sports star has bought a suite at 16 for the golf tourney…
