Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham announced on Bickley and Marotta that quarterback Sam Leavitt will be out of the remainder of the year.
Leavitt will have season-ending surgery to remedy a lower-leg injury, and it’s something that the quarterback had been dealing with for multiple weeks now dating back to ASU’s game against Baylor to open Big 12 play.
Sixth-year Jeff Sims will step in for Leavitt the rest of the way, and Cameron Dyer, who was just cleared from an ACL injury, will serve as the back-up.
ASU has seen the injuries pile up this year. Dilllingham pointed out earliest this week that of the six players Arizona State brought with them to Big 12 Media, four of them – Leavitt, Jordyn Tyson, X Alford and Ben Coleman – were currently out.
This is a side of football where the Sun Devils are getting hit hard and was fortunate to navigate through last year. When players like Cam Skattebo or Leavitt missed time, they missed for a single game. Tyson was missed at the end of the season, but he was generally healthy and a standout for much of the year. The great majority of the rest of that 2024 team was very healthy.
Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards with 10 passing touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. He’s also rushed for 306 yards and five scores on the ground.
Arizona State is on the road this week against Iowa State in a Big 12 championship rematch.
