On Thanksgiving Day in 2020, the Saguaro Sabercat program was informed that due to COVID-19, they would have to forfeit their first-round Open Division Playoff game. The Sabercats thought they could win it all, after a runner-up performance at the highest level in Arizona High School Football the season before.
As the 2021 season arrived, the players understood just how quickly the opportunity to play the game of football could be taken away. Even with just a single loss to rival, Chaparral, Saguaro flew under the radar into a fifth-place ranking in the Open Division Playoff. SagU entered their first-round match and took care of business agianst Cactus, 42-21.
With a new mindset, these Sabercats aren’t taking this opportunity for granted. Saguaro will face the top-ranked team in the state, Hamilton, in the Open Division semifinals on Dec. 4, in search of another trip to the Open Championship game.
